Underwater Inspection and Propeller Damage Repair on Oil Products Tanker

Case Study

Underwater Inspection and Propeller Damage Repair on Oil Products Tanker

A valued client contacted Subsea Global Solutions’ European dive station in Antwerp, Belgium to inspect the propeller condition of a 250 meter Product Tanker in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The inspection was requested by the vessel’s principal due to operational anomalies and suspected propeller damage.

While underwater visibility was limited, it was sufficient for the targeted propeller blade inspection and the coated propeller was found to have a stroke of coating detachment some 150 mm wide on the trailing edge, specifically on the pressure side running 1 meter from hub all the way to the tip and around into the leading edge. All but one of the blades showed only normal wear with no significant damage or deformation to the blades themselves.

However the final blade was damaged with a missing section and deformation along the edge, this damage was consistent with an impact with an unknown hard object.

Our Solution

Anticipating the problem the dive team had arrived on site fully equipped and got straight to work calibrating the deformation damage, which due to its shape and if left unattended would run the risk of crack propagation on the affected blade.

Having identified the affected area to remove weak spots and leave the blade as close to original performance profile as possible, a small blade cropping was marked out.  A wide 130 degree 'V' form notch was cut deep enough to arrest the crack and remove deformed curvature (see pictures of the process).

After cutting the damaged section, the edges were rounded and polished to ensure hydrodynamic properties of the blade matched the lip profile of the surrounding blade surfaces and polished up to Rubert scale A+ to account for lack of coating.

Outcome

Performance: Hydrodynamic underwater performance properties were restored and preserved by meticulous profiling and polishing of the repaired section back to a Rubert scale A finish.

Stability: The damaged blade’s integrity was restored, mitigating the risk of crack propagation and further damage.

Readiness: Our crew was was able to complete this repair within the vessel’s normal port call, sailing away with peace of mind and a reduced risk of performance degradation or additional propeller issues.

Conclusion

Subsea Global Solutions demonstrated its ability to adapt and deliver results under evolving circumstances, showcasing technical expertise and commitment to customer satisfaction. The successful repair underscores Subsea Global's role as a trusted partner for complex underwater challenges.
