Port Shaft Seal Repair in Eleusis, Greece

Case Study

Port Shaft Seal Repair in Eleusis, Greece

Subsea Global Solutions was engaged to perform an emergency underwater shaft seal repair on a mid-size cruise vessel docked in Eleusis, Greece. Measuring approximately 200 meters in length, the vessel was experiencing complications with its port shaft seal assembly. After a local diving contractor documented significant damage during initial inspection, the client turned to Subsea Global Solutions for our experience in complex underwater repairs.

The seal system on this vessel was older face seal type, one not currently used or supported in many cases.

Upon arrival, the Subsea Global Solutions team discovered that approximately 25% of the seat ring had broken off and was missing entirely. The bellows housing and face ring were severely damaged. In addition, the knife cutter system that was installed was missing entirely due to the damage causing additional water ingress through a cover ring and under the seal liner. A number of studs were also broken off deep within the stern tube flange, requiring careful extraction. The client needed a rapid, precise solution that could be carried out in-water to avoid further delays and costly dry docking.

Fast, Class-Approved Underwater Seal Repair Restores Vessel Readiness

Subsea Global Solutions mobilized an experienced crew who completed the full scope of work over six shifts completely underwater without the use of a hyperbaric habitat.

The team began by extracting all damaged fasteners, some of which required mechanical drilling due to their depth and location. Also, broken components were disassembled from the system. Using a borescope, the crew inspected internal components and safely removed netting from the interspace. The client-provided spare seat ring was reused after careful hand profiling to ensure a flush surface, and new seal components, including face seal, bellows, spring assembly, and interlayer, were installed. With all tests passed, the rope guard was reinstalled.

Despite the challenging conditions and extent of damage, the project was completed on time and to class standards. The client expressed complete satisfaction with the work. This successful operation is another example of Subsea Global Solutions’ ability to deliver critical underwater repairs quickly, safely, and with minimal operational disruption.
