Stern Seal Exchange on an Oil/Chemical Tanker in Curacao
.png)
Subsea Global Solutions was called upon to perform a critical underwater stern seal exchange on an oil/chemical tanker over 100 meters in length docked in Curacao. Facing significant oil leakage, the client urgently needed a trusted partner with the expertise and resources to complete the repair efficiently, safely, and without disrupting the vessel's schedule.
The Challenge
The vessel was losing a considerable amount of oil daily, prompting the client to request a stern seal inspection to confirm the source of the leak. Following a detailed assessment, the leakage was verified, and it became clear that immediate action was required to avoid environmental risks, regulatory issues, and further operational disruptions.
The project took place inside the harbor at Curacao. The client’s strong existing relationship with Subsea Global Solutions—and their confidence in our proven track record with similar repairs—made us the trusted choice for this critical task.
The Solution and Execution
Mobilization and Resources
The project drew on Subsea Global Solutions' global reach and technical expertise. Teams from SGS Caribbean, SGS Gulf Coast, and SGS Long Beach collaborated to deploy a team of bonders, welders, divers and management/supervisors.
Planned Scope of Work
Over the course of the project timeline, the Subsea Global Solutions team carried out a series of critical steps to complete the stern seal exchange. After mobilization, initial activities included the removal of the rope guard, shaft runout and tail shaft measurements, and the fitting of adapter plates. A custom-designed habitat was installed to facilitate safe underwater work, allowing the team to de-water the area, drain the oil system, dismantle the existing seal assembly, and thoroughly clean and inspect the system’s rings. New seals were then bonded and profiled, with swipe testing conducted to ensure quality and fit. During the testing phase, two seals required rebonding due to minor abnormalities, which the team promptly addressed. Final project steps included system reassembly, successful leak testing, habitat removal, adapter plate recovery, and rope guard reinstallation—returning the vessel to full operational readiness.
Execution Highlights
Throughout the project timeline, our team completed the stern seal exchange efficiently. Although the vessel’s original stay in port was intended for discharge, loading, and bunkering, our swift mobilization and expert execution allowed necessary repairs to be completed seamlessly during its extended port call. Thanks to proactive coordination, skilled project management, and technical precision, Subsea Global Solutions ensured the vessel was successfully repaired and cleared for service without disruption to its broader operational schedule.
Results
- Full stern seal exchange completed successfully
- All seals passed final testing and inspection
- Vessel restored to operational readiness without dry-docking
