Efficiency at Sea: Successful PBCF Installation

Case Study

Efficiency at Sea: Successful PBCF Installation

Our operations team recently reached a significant milestone with the successful completion of a Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF) installation for the vessel Seagull in Singapore. The project was safely and efficiently executed under the supervision of Khairul Amry Bin Ja’afar and Khun Maung, whose leadership and technical expertise were instrumental in delivering a high-quality outcome.

This project highlights our technical precision and the resilience of our field teams in demanding marine environments.

Technical Precision in Action

The installation followed a rigorous documented procedure to ensure the highest standards of fuel efficiency and propulsion performance for our client:

  • Removal & Preparation: The team utilized air chisels for the precise removal of existing cement compounds and adapted rigging methods to fit the specific PBCF design.
  • Precision Alignment: The propeller was aligned perfectly to Blade A (12 o’clock position) before the PBCF was secured using a 3-ton capacity chain block.
  • Quality Fastening: Bolts were torqued in a strict star pattern according to manufacturer specifications and secured with seizing wire every two bolts.
  • Final Sealing: The team performed high-pressure grease pumping followed by a meticulous application of cement compound, which requires a curing period of 12 to 24 hours to ensure long-term durability.

Overcoming Operational Challenges

This project was a testament to our team's adaptability.

Despite several external hurdles, the job was completed in just four shifts (three operational and one inspection):

  • Environmental Agility: When faced with strong underwater currents, the team adjusted the schedule to begin diving operations at 5:00 AM to ensure diver safety and work accuracy.
  • Strategic Problem Solving: To combat the rapid hardening of the cement compound, the team proactively moved the support vessel, Achiever, to the stern position. This allowed for faster deployment and application within the strict two-minute working window.
  • Coordination Excellence: Despite delays from other cleaning crews occupying the work area, our team remained on standby and maintained constant communication to start the moment the site was clear.

A Note of Appreciation

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the entire team involved in the Seagull project.

From the divers navigating difficult currents to the office staff coordinating last-minute Class surveyor inspections, your "can-do" attitude did not go unnoticed.

The client has expressed high satisfaction with our efficiency and the quality of the final installation.

By identifying these "efficiency improvement opportunities" such as better pre-job planning and equipment optimization, we continue to set ourselves apart as leaders in the industry.
