Case Study – Tanker Hull Breach Repair with Insert Plate

Technical Situation

Tanker, length 183 meter / LOA 183 meter / 29,313 Tons Gross Tonnage, fully loaded with jet fuel.
During cargo operations, a submerged pile pierced through the hull.
SGS worked together with owner and class to develop repair plan that included the design and installation of an engineered cofferdam.
The damaged hull section was cropped and insert plate installed.
The internal dry and external underwater welding was all performed with certified diver / welders.
Repair was considered permanent by class.
